How to buy second-hand HO trains safely
Second-hand HO can be great value, but check the system, the condition and the electrics before you pay — especially old transformers.

What you’ll need
- Small test track and a known-good controller (for swapmeets)
- Phone torch and camera
Take care
- Don't plug in vintage mains transformers with damaged cases or leads.
Step by step
-
Step 1: Know which system you need
Make sure the model matches your layout: 2-rail DC or Märklin 3-rail AC, analogue or digital. A Märklin loco has a centre pickup shoe under it; 2-rail locos don't. Trix models are often the 2-rail version of Märklin ones.

Step 2: Check the scale
Measure the model if in doubt: an OO model is about 14% bigger than an HO one of the same train.
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Ask questions and get photos
Ask whether it runs, whether it has been converted (to digital or between AC and DC), whether all parts and the box are present, and for photos of the underside and wheels.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Test before paying if you can
At a swapmeet or shop, ask to run it on a test track. Jerky running after storage can just be dirt — Märklin says this is normal after long storage — but grinding noises or no movement at all mean repairs.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Don't use old transformers
Märklin warns that older transformers can give too high a voltage when reversing, and their insulation ages in storage. Treat any old transformer or controller with suspicion: check for cracked cases and damaged mains leads, and replace rather than use it if in doubt.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Check couplers and track
Coupler types vary; NEM 362 pockets make swaps easy. Old track may be a different system (for example Märklin M-track, which joins to C-track with a transition piece).
Next: step 7 -
Step 7: Pay safely
Use a payment method with buyer protection when buying online, and keep messages and listings.
Tips
- Clean wheels and pickups on any second-hand loco before running it on your layout.
When to get expert help
Have doubtful mains-powered equipment checked by a qualified person, or replace it.
Questions people ask
Is old Märklin M-track still usable?
Märklin says yes — a transition track joins M-track to C-track.
Can I convert a 3-rail loco to 2-rail?
It's possible but involves wheels and wiring; a specialist can advise.
