How to clean HO track and wheels
Jerky running and stalling are usually caused by dirty rails and wheels. A regular gentle clean keeps trains running smoothly on both 2-rail and Märklin 3-rail track.

Take care
- Solvents such as benzine and methylated spirit are flammable — ventilate the room, no naked flames, keep away from children.
- Abrasive cleaning blocks and paper can scratch the rail surface; if you use one, use it gently.
Step by step
-
Step 2: Wipe the rail tops
Märklin Magazin's advice is that wiping the tops of the rails with a wool cloth is basically enough. For stubborn dirt, put a little solvent on the cloth — Märklin mentions benzine (Waschbenzin) or methylated spirit (Spiritus) — and wipe again.

Step 3: Clean Märklin centre studs too
On 3-rail track, wipe across the centre studs as well — they collect dirt from the pickup shoe.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Reach awkward places
Under overhead wires or in tunnels, use a cleaning stick with felt pads, or run a track-cleaning wagon. Märklin's magazine describes motorised cleaning wagons for 2-rail track and a separate centre-conductor cleaner for 3-rail track.

Step 5: Clean the wheels
Dirty wheels put dirt back on the rails. Hold a wagon upside down and wipe the wheel treads with a cotton bud dampened with solvent, turning each wheel. For locos, wipe the wheels while the loco runs slowly on a powered section, holding it gently — or use a wheel-cleaning brush designed for the purpose.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Let it dry and test
Let the solvent evaporate fully, then switch on and run a loco slowly round the whole layout.
Tips
- Clean little and often rather than scrubbing once a year.
- After long storage, Märklin says jerky running is normal and cleaning usually helps.
When to get expert help
If a loco still runs badly after cleaning, a specialist dealer or the manufacturer's repair service can check the motor and pickups.
Questions people ask
How often should I clean?
Whenever running becomes jerky. Layouts in dusty rooms need it more often.
Can I oil the track?
Don't put oil on the rail tops; it reduces grip and attracts dirt.
