Step by step
-
Step 1: Identify the pocket
An NEM 362 pocket is a small open box on the end of the wagon or on a close-coupling arm. The coupler head has a dovetail-shaped flexible shank whose lugs catch behind the inner edges of the pocket. The same pocket is used on HO and S scale.

Step 2: Know the height
The standard sets the pocket height for HO at 8.5 mm (± 0.2 mm) above the rail, so heads from different makers should line up — but check with a gauge.
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Pull out the old head
Hold the pocket or close-coupling arm steady and pull the coupler head straight out with tweezers. Don't lever sideways, or you can break the pocket.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Push in the new head
Push the new head's shank straight in until the lugs click behind the pocket edges.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Check close-coupling movement
If the pocket is on a close-coupling mechanism, check it still slides out on curves and springs back on the straight.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Test on curves and points
Couple a rake of vehicles and run them over your tightest curves and points in both directions.
Tips
- Keep all vehicles in a train on the same coupler type.
- Märklin says its current close-coupler heads also couple to older Relex couplers.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between NEM 362 and close couplers?

Are NEM pockets on OO models?
Many recent Hornby and Bachmann OO models have them, according to Kadee's conversion list.
